"Tasty Buffalo-like Pod in Thailand"

On my way to Sukhothai province in the northern part of Thailand, I stopped along the highway to purchase some boiled "Krachab". "Krachab" is rather uncommon these days, so when I showed my kids, they were surprised by how much the "Krachab" resembles a Thai Water Buffalo: dark with two horns.

In terms of taste, it is sort of like chestnuts.

Hence, in English, it is called "Horn Chestnut" by its taste or "Water Chestnut" by its appearance.

Did you know...

• Water Chestnut/Horn Chestnut are water plants that can float.
• Its horn-shaped pod are underwater. The younger pods are purple-red while older pods are black with white insides. The older pods are boiled with a bit of salt. When eating it, we peel off the black cover and eat the insides
• The pods can be harvested around November - February
• Most of these pods are grown in Thailand's Central plain such as Ayuthaya, Ang-Thong, Singhaburi, and Suphanburi provinces.

เก็บรูปมาฝากเพื่อนๆ ค่ะ...กระจับ มีรสมันปนหวานหน่อยๆ คล้ายถั่วค่ะ อืม...รสชาติทำนองเกาลัด แต่ไม่เหมือนกันนะคะ...เดาว่าคงเป็นเพราะเหตุนี้ ชื่อภาษาฝรั่งของเขาจึงเป็น "Water Chestnut" ค่ะ และโดยรู

ปร่างหน้าตาของเขาที่เหมือน "เขาควาย" ชื่อฝรั่งของเขาอีกชื่อจึงเป็น "Horn Chestnut" ค่ะ...ลองซื้อชิมดูนะคะ สำหรับเพื่อนๆ ที่ยังไม่เคยชิมค่ะ :))

เกร็ดความรู้เกี่ยวกับ "กระจับ" ค่ะ

• "กระจับ" หรือ "Water Chestnut / Horn Chestnut" เป็นพืชน้ำ ขึ้นลอยในน้ำโดยอาศัยก้านใบเป็นทุ่น ทำนองเดียวกับผักตบชวา
• ฝักกระจับอยู่ใต้น้ำ ลักษณะคล้ายเขาควาย ฝักอ่อนสีม่วงอมแดง ฝักแก่สีดำ เนื้อข้างในสีขาว...เราจะนำฝักแก่มาต้ม ใส่เกลือเล็กน้อย เพื่อรับประทาน...เวลาทาน แกะเปลือกสีดำออก ทานเนื้อข้างใน...รสมันปนหวานหน่อยๆ ค่ะ
• กระจับจะออกฝัก ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึงเดือนกุมภาพันธ์
